MONDAY

WATER MEDIA! Painting Basics for Everybody with Carolann Dvorak Brewer

This is the class for EVERYBODY who's ever wanted to paint, EVERYBODY who used to paint, EVERYBODY who likes to paint now and EVERYBODY else, too. Learn to use watercolor, acrylic and water soluble oil paints - and decide which one is for you. Concepts such as shading, color mixing, subject selection and composition will be demystified. This is a terrific beginner opportunity and an excellent refresher, too.

Screen Printing Techniques with Elizabeth Uryase

Join our Artist in Residence with exploring a variety of techniques in screen-printing. Methods include using photo emulsion, screen filler and block, stencils and multi-layering designs and images. Work with all the necessary supplies to capture the Warhol in you! Fifteen minutes of fame - NOT included.

Narrative and Sequential Art with Michael Lavoie

This class will explore techniques in visual pictorial communication and design. Much of this class will focus on the process and requirements involved in creating illustrated works of almost any type. Such topics will include gathering reference material and photographic reference. Assignments will tailored towards the individual student while still working within a specific set of project parameters. Possible projects include sequential and comic book design as well traditional illustration. Illustrations can be executed in almost any media.

Pen & Ink Illustration on Paper with Eve Olitski

Work with a published illustrator to learn techniques of the pen, presented through demonstrations and guided exercises. Focus on creating your won style, exploring cross-hatching, stippling and experimental approached to this age-old medium. Create a portfolio of pages to present to editors for publication. The final project will be a creation of your horoscope sign utilizing the techniques learned.

Begin Oil Painting with Susan Brereton

Learn the basics with instruction that will set you on your path. Once you begin there is no stopping! Color theory, composition, under-painting methods and problem solving are just some of the topics discussed. Those looking to try painting or those aiming to become a master will have successful experiences with this session. Materials list available upon enrollment.

The Art of Photoshop with Kathy Smits


Download a free 30 day trial of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and bring your laptop to learn the creative side of Photoshop software. Learn the basics of layers and making selections, as well as how to enhance images, create collage and even paint with the electronic brushes.

Design Your Own "Business Collateral" with Kathy Smits


Working with Microsoft Word, learn the basics of good graphic design and all the tools at your disposal in Microsoft Word. Bring your laptop and learn how to create business cards, flyers, mailers, brochures, then take them to your favorite printer or print them yourself. Students will be referencing a text book - "The Non-Designers Design Book", 3rd edition by Robin Williams.

Design Your Own Web Portfolio and Launch a Website with Kathy Smits

Grab your thumb drive of files, pack your laptop and a sharpened number two pencil to get sketching out ideas on establishing your own web pages with a free web platform. Smits will share the inside secrets to becoming your own web master to your universe. Beginner friendly, but sessions and topics may include technical terms. Participants should have a variety of photo files to work with and the ability to compose copy for inserting information for sites.

Oil Pastel Painting with Zbigniew Grzyb

This course offers beginners, intermediate and advanced levels a chance to learn the basics of oil pastel painting. Study principles of composition, light and shade, color mixing, and painting techniques, with individual instruction at every level. Students with some experience will be encouraged and guided to develop their own distinctive look. Materials and an idea for a painting required at the first class.

Relief Printing with Michael Lavoie

A studio course delving into the basics of relief printing methods and techniques. Experiences will include carving in both wood and linoleum. A full rage of printing techniques will also be explored including single color block printing, subtractive and additive methods for color printing. Subject matter is left completely up to the students but there will be a heavy emphasis on elements of composition and design.

Pet Lovers Draw with Susan Brereton


Interested in drawing your pet, but never really knew how to get started? Gain a solid foundation and understanding of the basics to drawing animals and capture that special friend for all time! Working from your own photo reference, you'll gain an understanding of how to break down your pet into basic shapes and then transform your drawing into a finished work of art by exploring the use of line, creating volume through shading and establishing a mood and feeling through composition and lighting. Great class for beginners and those more advanced.

A course designed for the beginner and advanced artist consisting of a series of exercises enabling the student to have a solid foundation in watercolors. Subjects and exercises to include color, still life, and landscapes. The student's personal creativity and growth will be encouraged.

Introduction to Soft Pastels with Caroline McKay


Painting with soft pastels is immediately exciting and gratifying, with no waiting for the paint to dry or brushes to clean! McKay' teaches techniques for soft pastels, discusses material choices and safety, and shares pointers about pastel artwork storage and framing. Mainly for those new to the world of pastels, where she accommodates intermediate and advanced experienced students. Materials and an idea or rough sketch for the painting is required at first class.

Clay Hand building with Jim Brunelle

Learn basic hand building techniques of slab and coil work. Use your techniques to create functional or decorative pieces that will be glazed and fired. Sessions appropriate for all levels of experience and ideal for those looking to discover clay techniques. Firing and materials fee payable to instructor at first class.

Acrylic/Oil Painting Boot Camp with Zbigniew Grzyb

Figure Drawing with Paul Iezzi


Learn to draw the figure using a variety of medium including charcoal, pastels, ink and pencil. Hone or begin your ability to "see" through an artist's eye working with a new model each week. Course lessons including gesture, contour and proportion offering personal growth and self-expression through the series of classes. Beginner-friendly.

Storytelling Through Illustration with Jordan Deschene

Have a recent dream reoccur, or find yourself drifting in thought with how you might convey a thought? Our Summer Artist in Residence hosts a session in Studio 6A with focus on aspects of storytelling through imagery. He introduces and demonstrates techniques in painting and exploration in various mediums.

THURSDAY

Narrative Collage with Dorota Rzepecki

Create collages with each devoted on theme based subjects. Participants will reflect on life experiences related to archetypes, mythology and dreams and apply artistic elements of design while keeping in mind the inspirational and emotional context intended for creating collage. Creating hand painted papers and using images from magazines and other references, students will allow themselves to be drawn to appropriate subject matter for their project. The mystery unfolds as you cut, tear, rip, and glue pieces onto matt board.

Mixed Media Illustration with Caroline McKay

Caroline demonstrates a mixed media technique that is excellent for book and greeting card illustration. It involves soft pastels, colored pencils, and oil glazes. Students will begin with an idea for the artwork, preferably a rough sketch, needed at the first class. Instructor provides 15" x 20" cold press illustration board. Options to work larger, paper should be supplied by the student.

Understanding Photography in the Technical Age with Mallorie Ostrowitz

You have the equipment - now is the time to work on your photography skills. These sessions cover all the elements of composition that make a better photograph. Types of lenses and how they affect the resulting image, choosing and placing subject, and use of line, color, pattern and texture as they all relate to the photograph. Best to have your camera at the first session. Some travel for photo shooting images is suggested.

Gain confidence with real observations and expression by developing skills in composition using watercolors. Techniques include emphasis on mixing colors for value and intensity to create a masterpiece of your choosing.

Painting with Acrylics or Oils with Paul Iezzi

Get involved with a series of sessions of painting instruction for all levels and for those wanting to explore advancing their skills. Participants can get a fresh start on a new piece or choose to bring a work in progress to consult with the instructor. A session designed to offer an alternate recreation for your weekend by introducing exercises in the study of color, subject, still life, landscapes and abstraction. Students are encouraged to express personal vision and creativity.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

Wet & Needle Felting in Wool with Elena Gibson

Explore the ancient technique of transforming wool roving into felt and create small 2 -D and 3-D felted pieces. Design, construct and fashion one-of-a-kind art pieces, broaches, hair clips, small medallions and figurative sculpture. Students explore a variety of felting methods including use of special barbed needle to embellish your pieces. This workshop is beginner friendly. Please bring a towel.

Inside Out Book Collages with Lynn Gall

Try something different in this 2-day workshop with New York artist Lynn Gall. Begin by taking apart a book of your choosing, (all parts; covers, pages, binding and even the thread are used to make a series (3) of small collages/mixed media pieces. Include papers, paints, script/writing to tell a story of your own. The book can be old or new but be prepared to destroy it in the name of creating. Combine your love of books and art in an exciting way with this workshop. Materials list upon request.

Buddha'riffic Altar Building with Susan Aranoff

Construct a tabletop ceremonial altar guided by Guru Su. Work with pre-printed images of Buddha, mixed media, papers and paint then guide yourself on a spiritual journey. Apply details creating collage compositions reflecting your inner icons and mantras creating a piece unique to your own beliefs. Practicing daily meditations following this interactive and colorful building project optional. Suitable for all levels of interest.

Design and Create a Soft Bangle Bracelet for Your Mother with Phyllis Cohen

Work with the right bangle weave stitch to create an elegant Bangle Bracelet. Instructor provides all materials for completing a personal gift for Mother's Day. Working with Sterling Silver, Swarovki & Prescoisa Crystals and beading cord in a variety of color, all levels of interest from beginner to advanced.

Books in Abundance with Aimee Lee

Learn how to make a plethora of book structures using simple but powerful tools: the knife (cutting), the bonefolder (folding), adhesives (gluing), and the needle (sewing). Traditional bookbinding basics combined with contemporary creative exercises will help students transform their materials and stories into meaningful books. One sheet of paper will be manipulated five different times to create ingenious books. Mark-making techniques from pochoir to simple prints will transfer content to books. Students will also make their own decorative paper for covers through painting and textile techniques. This class is suitable for all levels of experience. Join Aimee Lee in the Drezner Visitors' Gallery with an Opening Reception exhibit or her work April 27, time TBA.

Experience Zentangle® with First Saturday May Open Studios with Kathy Parulski

An intuitive art form using pen & ink and the philosophy created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas of Zentangle, Inc., using meditation through doodling. Participants create beautiful abstract images on paper tiles from repetitive patterns of pen and pink with the guidance of a certified instructor. Work among artists, professionals and enthusiasts to find your own voice in your personal Zentangle® expression. All supplies included for all levels of interest.

Paper Marble Techniques with Eve Olitski

Discover the fascinating and spontaneous results of working with oils and marbling papers. Learn the art of paper marbling to create an amazing vocabulary of images and designs. One session will focus on creating and learning the technique of marbling and other session uses the papers for unique and personal collages. Paper marbling is full of surprising results and can add to your artistic voice in improvisation and surprise. Creating papers for use in mixed media projects, book binding and collage are some of the options for using marbled papers. Collage is a great way to be free to interpret your inner creative self. All supplies provided with a materials fee of $15 each for paints and papers is payable to the instructor.

Mixed Media Collage Sculpture with Irene Reed


Irene's sculpture has graced the walls of FVAC Galleries for decades and adorned the elite with her fiber sculptural handbag constructions including a variety of media and found objects. Work with the MASTER at creating a mixed media mosaic sculpture. Using your found objects and memorabilia to compose a unique piece of identity. Techniques include adhesives, paper pulp, painting, molding, and story telling.
